There are two types of music: music that a lot of people like, and music that musicians like. (Actually, theres many types, but lets just focus on these two.) Popular music is not necessarily music that is either a) complex b) well-thought out or c) lasting. As a result, musicians have a tendency to listen to different types of music that fall outside of the pop category. In fact, there is a whole world of music that musicians are extremely fond of that isnt a) very profitable b) easy to listen to or c) easily understandable by people without a music degree.

So what happens when you take 7 musicians, 1 stage at ORileys on Forest Lane, and 1 hour between 9:30 and 10:30 on a Monday night? You get the Mark Austin Band, which represents that rare breed of music that ANYONE can enjoy.

The band consists of Mark Austin on bass and vocals, Scott Weltner on drums, Larry Spencer on trumpet, Keith Adkins on trombone, Les Schloss on sax, Paul Garceau on guitar and vocals, and Daniel Cisneros on percussion. A quick look at their credentials and you realize that they are professional musicians who have played with Gloria Estefan, Patti LaBelle, Buddy Rich, Henry Mancini, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, etc. etc. etc. (If youre not impressed, stop right here and leave knowing you know very little about music)

There is no question that these 7 people are talented. But the most important thing is that they play great music. Its fun. Its exciting. Its get-up-out-of-your-seat-and-move music. Its exactly the type of music you would expect to hear from 7 super-talented musicians who enjoy playing together. But its also the type of music thats just so much fun to listen to that you dont need to have a music degree to enjoy it.
Bottom line: Go see the Mark Austin band. Dont let the fact that its a Monday night fool you...this band would fly any night of the week. (And dont forget to tell Mark that we sent you!) |
